With a surface of 7,340 sq mi (19,000 km2), Lake Ontario is the smallest of the five Great Lakes which are interconnected and form the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth by total area, and second largest by total volume containing 21% of the world’s surface fresh water by volume.

Such cool and refreshing pictures this stifling hot evening in SE France. I flew over Lake Michigan from Boston to Chicago two Christmases ago and all of a sudden that fact , that 21% fact penetrated my dense skull. The Great Lakes are a wonder of this earth and to be protected at all costs.

I’m glad to hear these photos are providing a sense of coolness in the stifling summer heat of Southern France. I relate completely as I am back in the East Bay of California and the temps this week are hovering around 100+. I could sure use a walk near the ocean or lake.
And yes, the Great Lakes are a wonder of this planet earth. I find being near them to be very calming and healing.

For me it’s a question of gaining altitude and hiking to one of the alpine lakes. The rewards are great but the effort in the heat is taxing!
